1) it was our way to Vienna and Budapest
2) would cut the train ride in half (to vienna/budapest there were like no direct train/3 changeovers/15 hours)
3) If we spent the day there...we would save on two nights accommodation!!
4) Plus we figured... who can say they've been to Slovenia?
Our first overnight train ride was really fun - but not "scary" at all. We got to see a beautiful sunset and we wound up running into one of the guys in a band that we met at O'Haras (the club in Croatia). SMALL WORLD. The conductor kept coming in and waking us up every time we stopped or entered into another country...which really was only twice...so it wasn't that bad We were able to pull out the seats and make them into couches. I think I may have snored a little bit (my apologizes mare + gibo) and finally found a comfortable sleeping position approx 10 minutes out of Slovenia which was unfortunate.
When we got to Slovenia, we researched things to do and Mary found this place called lake bled. We explored the town a little bit which was really gorgeous. The streets were all closed off and bustling with people. We came across a big area with many open-air markets. We walked across the "famous" dragon bridge, and tried to find the castle. We had limited time because we had to make a train to Lake Bled - a place mary had found via google which looked pretty cool. We hopped on a train and took a little day trip there! The lake was really pretty and was surrounded by mountains. What was special about the lake was that a glacier had melted leaving a little plot of land in the middle called "Bled Island" where a building remained. You could take a boat out there but we didnt. We went for a walk around the lake and sat to grab a drink at a restaurant. I bet Ali (who had just run a Marathon) she couldn't beat us back running 2 miles the opposite way around the lake...if Mare+I walked at a normal pace the other way back 1.5miles. Stupid, but we wanted to entertain ourselves.
She won. I was shocked! After that we went to the gift shop, bought a bracelet, and went back to the train station where we had to wait a half hour for our train. So mare and I pulled out the hackie and got a good sesh in at Bled. We met these hitchhikers for charity there. Their mission was to hitch-hike all the way from a Uni in England to Krakow Poland in like 10 days or something ridiculous.
Crazy. After that we went back to the train station and hung out where we met a bunch of new Slovenian/Bosnian/Real Eastern European people. I'm not sure they had ever met Americans before and wanted to know everything about it/us. They were super friendly and even gave us little gifts. One gave Ali her earring (because she liked it and I was jealous) but she gave me a keychain. We got so caught up chatting with them that we almost missed our train to Vienna, and on top of that when we got on the train we realized we had left our bags in lockers on the opposite side of the train station and only had 3 minutes to get them!
We made it.
Thank god.
