It all started when I pulled to my first lacrosse match and met Ali Gibbons, who my family/extended family has come to call Leisel (for reasons I will not put on the internet) and who my kids will come to call Crazy Aunt Ali.
We met on a Saturday morning before a lacrosse game that we randomly happened to be on the same team. Our first conversation:
Ali (gets out of car): Burps
Me: Laughs hysterically
Ali: American?
Me: Haha Yes.
After an hour game (which we won) we got to chatting about lax, and making fun of the squash we had just been served (because...who drinks squash to refresh you??) Our goodbye conversation went something like this:
Ali : What are you doing in April?
Me: Not sure...but trying to travel
Ali: Thinking about inter railing through Eastern Europe...want to come?
Me: Yup.
I knew it was going to be the journey of a lifetime. Mary, another laxer who I hadn't met yet was also signed along for the trip. Hadn't met her, but figured: American, Laxer she's gotta be normal. We booked a flight to Zadar, Croatia on April 11th, 2011. Our plan...we had none. We figured we could book accommodation at internet cafe along the way, had a map of eastern europe so had circled places we'd like to go to, and decided we'd sleep on some overnight trains to save some cash. All we had booked was a unlimited train pass and a flight home from Bremen, Germany on April 27th, 2011 so all we had to do was get there by then!
EASY.....
